Founding Meeting for Peacemakers’ Project for the PlanetNew Peacemakers’ Project for the Planet
As a result of the Pacem in Terris Summer Series, “Making Peace with the Planet,” interest has developed in starting a new project for peacemakers that would combine the issues of peace, ecology, economy, and justice. It will hold its first organizational meeting on Thursday, September 24, at 7 pm, and you are cordially invited to attend. We will meet in Classroom #5 at Westminster Presbyterian Church , 1506 W. 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
If you are interested in sustainability and justice, about the moral and ethical obligations of the countries with the heaviest carbon footprints towards the people in developing countries who are already being negatively impacted by global warming, the problem of climate refugees, the prevention of resource wars, the development of new economic models and alternative energy sources that will enable a sharing rather than unrestrained exploitation of the world’s resources – this kind of project may be just what you are looking for.
Our challenge will be to educate ourselves and others about the issues and about innovative practical solutions that we can engage in. A really important book in this regard is The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience by Rob Hopkins. The transition movement was created by Louise Rooney and popularized by Rob Hopkins. It was founded in Kinsale, Ireland and was then spread to Totnes, England by environmentalist and permaculture designer Rob Hopkins during 2005 and 2006. The aim of the project is to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil in a way that builds local environmental and economic resilience. It is possible that Pacem’s Peacemakers’ Project for the Planet will become the nucleus that brings the transition movement to Delaware.
