Attend a Nonviolent Parenting Class

Active Parenting Now series starts Sunday, November 1st, at the Limestone Presbyterian Church. Active Parenting Now helps parents (and grandparents and others concerned about children) learn to raise responsible, cooperative children (ages 5-12) who are prepared to meet the challenges of the teen years. This comprehensive new parenting program retains everything that was great about Active Parenting Today (older edition) and adds the content today's families need. This series teaches skills that will help parents develop cooperation, responsibility and self-esteem in their children. Parents also learn positive, non-violent discipline techniques so they can avoid power struggles. This series was given the first place media award for parenting issues by National Council on Family Relations. The popular parenting series has been featured on CNN-TV, PBS-TV and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The all-new videos come with a new parent's book that covers many helpful topics: What our kids will need to succeed; Styles of parenting; Mutual respect; "Method of choice"; Handling problems; Building cooperation; Active Communication; Teaching responsibility; Effective discipline techniques; "I" messages; Logical consequences; Why children misbehave; Sidestepping power struggles; Think-Feel-Do cycle; Character, courage, self-esteem; Stimulating independence; Power of encouragement and Parents influencing events.

The six sessions cover a comprehensive approach to parenting based on proven-effective psychological principles; drug and alcohol prevention; humor, warmth, and the most effective skills available; and practical ideas for nurturing faith in children at home.

The Active Parenting Now teachers will be Bruce & Carolyn Gillette, parents of three children and co-pastors at Limestone Presbyterian Church. The Gillettes have taught parenting programs annually for over 20 years and are the co-authors of Active Parenting Now in the Community of Faith (AP Publishers, 2003). They wrote the study/action guide to Transforming Families (2005).

The only cost is the parents' book for $15; scholarships for the book are available.

Free childcare is available at the church for participants who register beforehand.

Limestone Presbyterian Church is located at 3201 Limestone Road/Route 7 in the Pike Creek area of Wilmington.
