The Anti-Nuclear Movement in 2009The Antinuclear Movement in 2009/2010
by Harvey Zendt
It would be a wonderful tribute to humanity if twenty years from now, we find the following in our history books. "In the 1940's scientists explored the mysteries of the atom and their work led to the use of the atomic bomb. A number of countries built up a dangerous stockpile of these bombs, but by 2020 leaders recognized the dangers of these weapons and took steps to eliminate their use forever on this planet."
The next year is a crucial one in the movement to make these words reality. Three significant treaties - START, NPT and CTBT - are going to be acted on, and the direction of them will influence the future of these weapons. There are a number of prominent groups and individuals who are putting their energies into this cause, including Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, Ted Turner and of course Barack Obama.
Despite these efforts, many US citizens are unaware of the importance of this movement to the future of humanity. I continue to help the antinuclear movement in a variety of ways and am beginning to plan a series of presentations in the Delaware Valley and other areas on the east coast. They will take place in schools, churches and other community centers. I will be using posters from the Hiroshima Peace Foundation as visual support for my message.
These talks are going to focus on the moral, political, environmental, economic and strategic reasons why we should rid the world of nuclear weapons and what people can do to support this effort.
If you would like me to share this presentation with a group, in which you are connected, or if you want to get involved in this effort, please contact Harvey Zendt at hzendt@yahoo.com. I can adjust this program to various ages and time allotments.
